Family History

The realtor’s build date of 1880 for this beauty is incorrect as the home is mentioned in an 1877 article in the Burlington Hawk- Eye newspaper. W.B. Lawrence and his wife Eliza owned the home from as early as 1856. Eliza died young, however, and the widower Lawrence continued to live in the house along with a boarder and his wife. Lawrence was a hotel keeper in his younger days and a horse and mule trader in his latter.

He must have been a real gentleman, either that or shrewd, because if you read the article, you will see that Lawrence  invited the burglar back to the home to retrieve his overcoat that he left behind as long as the burglar showed proof of ownership and would pay for the newspaper fee.
