OHU50K NOTES

We can see the house (under red X) on the 1891 Sanborn Fire Insurance map. It was located next to a bank, barber and grocery store all no longer there.  The home is also on the 1884 Sanborn map where a dentist had offices in the front of the house. That means the 1890 build date is off. If you wondering about the colors on the map, pink is a brick building and yellow is stick built.

Family History

Further evidence of the build date being off is an old plat map.  It shows the house was owned by J.C. Morrow in 1888. Per the 1910 US Census, Jason C. Morrow (1837-1911), a banker, lived here with his wife Ada Chapman Morrow (1848- 1937), and her sister Jane Van Alinda. In 1905, the Morrow’s adult son, William, an attorney, was still living with them. Ada died in this home in 1937.

Below is an obituary on FindAGrave, from an unknown newspaper clipping.

Mrs. Ada Morrow Expires At Her Family Home
Well Known Theresa Resident

Her Parents, Mr. and Mrs. William D. Chapman, Were Among Pioneers of Theresa Section–Funeral to Be Held Saturday

Theresa, Feb. 27 — Mrs. Ada Morrow, 88, widow of J. C. Morrow, died at her family home in Main street this village Wednesday evening, after a gradual decline in health which became more serious within the past few days. Her daughter, Mrs. Florence Wilbur, Tarrytown, reached here Wednesday morning, and a son, Attorney W. D. Morrow, long with the tax department in Albany, reached here this morning. Both Mrs. Wilbur and Mr. Morrow had been here previously but it was thought their mother’s health was better and they had returned to their homes.

Mrs. Morrow comes from a pioneer family of Theresa. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. William D. Chapman. The Chapmans ventured into this wilderness region with the Bodmans in 1818, coming from Deerfield, Mass. William Chapman built up one of the largest fishing tackle factories in the east in his day. He was an inventor of marked ability.

Mrs. Morrow was born in this village on July 26, 1847. She finished in the select schools here and married the late Jason C. Morrow about the year 1874. Mr. Morrow was a banker here, being connected with the pioneer Yost bank. He was also a supervisor and railroad commissioner of the town. She was Mr. Morrow’s second wife. To them were born two children, Florence, wife of Attorney Carl Wilbur of Tarrytown, and Attorney William D. Morrow of Albany, who survive. Mr. Morrow had two children by the first marriage, Hilon, retired banker of Blissfield, Mich., and Mrs. Maude Keeler of Toledo, O.

Mrs. Morrow died on the birthday of her only surviving sister, Mrs. Nellie Stockwell, who was 82. The sister and children are the only surviving relatives, with several grandchildren.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Theresa.

The funeral services will be from the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Rev. A. R. Ehman officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, which her husband assisted in founding. Relatives are arriving Friday from Tarrytown and Albany and other places.
