OHU50K NOTES

This c.1883 home for sale towers over the smaller homes on a corner lot on Calhoun Street in Chillicothe, Missouri. The stately home not only boasts a third story sleeping porch dripping with gingerbread, but a tower and corner bay to boot. Too bad much of the original definition around the windows and doors was covered up by vinyl siding.

Family History

I could not go as far back as the build date of 1883, but I did discover that sometime before 1930 Sylvester J. Gantner (1891-1952) and his wife, Faye Cleone Livick Gantner (1893-1977), purchased the home. It was valued at $7,000 in 1930. They lived here with their one child, Marilyn. Sylvester was a building contractor, and Faye was somewhat of a socialite. Numerous blurbs in the local newspapers recount her trips to Kansas City and St. Joe, her shopping forays with her daughter and her visit to the automobile show. Faye fancied herself a movie critic and was a member of the Olive Prindle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Around the time of the Great Depression, it appears Sylvester’s contracting business fell into decline, and the value of the home during the depression sank to $4,500. He was forced to take odd jobs as a brick mason and rent out a portion of the home to D.A. Meinsershagen, a teacher at the business college, and his wife, June Ann, for $43 a month. This did not stop Faye from her trips to the big cities as the gossip columns of the Chillicothe Tribune attest to.
