734 N Coal St, Colchester, IL, 62326     $90,000 ~ Off Market

Built in 1884, this move-in ready beauty was the home of Moses King (1845-1909), who also owned the Colchester Brickyard. Moses and his wife Ann came from England to Illinois in 1870. They lived in this house with their children, Elizabeth, William, Robert, Joe, Benny, Margaret and Edward. The four older boys were day laborers at their father’s tile and brick manufacturing plant.
The house sits opposite the Mount Auburn Cemetery where Moses and Ann are buried.  The house is located next to the Moses King Brick and Tile Works which is also for sale at 738 North Coal Street. The complex originally included our featured Folk Victorian home, seven beehive kilns (only 4 still remain), the factory building and its drying tunnels, two exhaust stacks, and various outbuildings.
According to Wikipedia:
Moses King established the brickworks on his own land, which held one of the county’s richest clay deposits, in 1881. The brickworks was a major part of Colchester’s clay industry, which developed as a way of using excess coal from the city’s more prominent coal mining industry; it eventually became one of the city’s main economic drivers, along with coal and the railroad. While coal and clay both declined in Colchester in the twentieth century, the brickworks survived as a producer of buff brick, ultimately becoming the last surviving brickworks in the city. It closed in the 1960s when buff brick declined in favor of colored brick, which could be more easily obtained from other sources.

This beautiful and updated move-in ready 1.5-story brick home sits on 2.48 acres — and is on the National Register of Historic Places! Built in 1884 by the Moses King family (owners of Colchester’s famous Brickyard, also for sale), this home features hard-surface floors (wood, tile, and laminate) throughout, a spacious bathroom with a skylight, a roomy basement with lots of storage space, and an outdoor hot tub with shower.
Beyond the patio you’ll find two brick shop buildings measuring 26×32 and 29×50. Also included with the sale: built-in bed upstairs and daybed on main floor, wall-mounted TV, two chairs upstairs, and most appliances. The property consists of two parcel IDs: 05-000-281-05 and 05-000-279-10.
