OHU50K NOTES
Extraordinary home, known as the Captain Higgie Home, sits on 1.61 acres and was owned by two of Girard’s most prominent families. It was built by the Higgie family, who resided there for 30 years, and then the Sauer family owned it for 70 years!
Family History
This originally was the home of Captain William F. Higgie (1847-1907) and his wife Marion Higgie (1858-1934). The Captain owned a store, and the couple lived in the elegant home, where they often held social events.
It was passed down to William Henry Higgie (1888-1953) and his wife Eva McNaught Higgie (1886-1978). William served in WWI and took over his father’s drug store after the war. His military records state that he was a tall man of medium build with medium brown hair and light blue eyes.
In 1915, Henry Emanuel Sauer (1877-1950) and his wife Lora Evans Sauer (1873-1975) purchased the home from Captain Higgie. At the time Henry was mayor of Girard and also the founder and owner of Sauer’s Department Store. The couple lived here with their children Gertrude, Joseph, Le Roy and Eugene.
The home was passed down to his son Le Roy Henry Sauer (1902-1979) and his wife Margaret Walsh Sauer (1903-1996) who lived here until at least 1979. Le Roy was the co-owner of Sauer’s Department Store in Girard.

Absolutely wonderful home. I wish I would have seen this two and a half weeks ago I would have paid cash immediately. It’s exactly the kind of house I’ve been looking for. But I bought a house in Richardson Texas that need substantial updates and I won’t have it on the market till February because it’s going to take awhile to get everything done. Every once in awhile you find a good deal like I did and you can make quite a bit of money on it. But for me it’s a rare occasion when I find a house that I want to remodel and live in that’s still on the market. Oh well I hope you get full price it’s definitely worth it and in February if it’s available I’ve got to be knocking on your door. Thank you for showing me such a lovely house. Respectfully,
Chuck
Beautiful (except for the green bathroom. Lol)
Why is the address still on Summit St. when it’s blocks away?
Listed for 414 days?
Obvious question, why?

This is an absolutely beautiful home. It is so fortunate it appears so intact. I can magine the parties that occurred there.

I love it, too.

I absolutely fell in love with it upon first glance. Maybe I didn’t read too closely for cosmetically it appears well kept. Begs me to wonder what needs renovation. Compared to several houses I have purchased, this is top notch! Electrical? HVAC? Foundation? So wish life circumstances prevent me from relocating to Kansas!

Love the layout. Could use some work but lovely all the same. Who takes the photographs. I always zoom in to get a great view of the wonderful stained glass windows. I actually zoomed in on the oval mirror and in the left side of the mirror it looks like a ladies face -but really grey. Still a wonderful home.

Sorry just looked closer , was just a poster of Marilyn Monroe reflecting in the mirror.

If I were in a position, I’d purchase this home for the kitchen ceiling alone♥️
