c.1890 Fixer Upper Second Empire in Schenevus, NY
A Second Empire with a converted carriage house in the hamlet of Schenevus. Having owned a 15-acre farmette in the Schoharie Valley back in the day, I have passed through Schenevus several times. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous.
This home has had a couple of families in the last few decades who have attempted to restore it. More than three decades ago a man purchased the home for his wife, but she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s soon after. The house lay vacant for 30 years, but a hired man did some electrical and plumbing work during that time as I understand it. In 2016, the home was sold to a family who also had plans to restore it and make it their forever house, however, with a child battling cancer, the project became difficult.
They did work on and lived in the carriage house, though, while also removing walls in the main house that had mold and replacing them with sheetrock.
This house is the culmination of John Graney’s success story. John Graney (1855-1918) was born in 1855 to a poor family of Irish descent. He and his wife Amelia Spencer Graney (1855-1934) owned the home, and often took rides through the town in the sleighs found in the 2016 pics of the house (below). The couple never had children of their own, but Mr. Graney organized fairs for the local children among other activities. John worked hard, invested well, and was elected President of the Schenevus National Bank in 1899, making a great success of it.
He was involved in an auto accident in 1917, which laid him up in bed for more than a year before succumbing to his injuries.
