History

According to Indiana Landmarks:

Located on the southern edge of the Roann National Register Historic District, the modest Gothic Revival-style Church of the Brethren was built in 1890, then enlarged in 1921 with a new front entry. It served as a house of worship until the mid-1980s, when the congregation built a new structure across the street.

Members continued to use the historic church for youth programs and social gatherings, but deferred maintenance began to take a toll on the aging building. Unable to tackle restoration, the congregation reached out to Indiana Landmarks in 2011. We agreed to market the church, with the understanding that the sale would include a protective exterior easement to preserve the building.

The former church passed through a series of owners with good intentions but inadequate resources until it captivated Valerie. “I looked at the building, but thought it would be too much work for me,” she says. “Something kept drawing me back to look at it again, and I decided to take a leap of faith.”

Restoration Efforts

After taking ownership of the building in April, Valerie removed all of the building’s Gothic arched windows for professional restoration, and employed contractors to work on plumbing and heating systems. In addition, the old asphalt-shingle roof was replaced with an authentic standing seam metal roof.

This is truly a, very cool, feel-good space… inside and out. On a beautiful street. This church is currently used for events but can be transformed into residential living, a small business or wherever your creativity leads you. Currently, the main floor is an open space with refinished hardwood floors, beautiful wood ceiling, and plenty of windows to let that light in. The lower level is a wide-open space also and has a kitchen, two restrooms (one is currently not in use), washer/dryer hook up and plenty of space. There is also the original baptismal pool that has a protective grate cover. Many updates such as refinished wood flooring, some new wiring and plumbing, metal roof, stripped and reglazed windows, new furnace. There is a small wood outbuilding with a wood deck that just contributes to a GREAT space. The quaint town of Roann has a lot to offer with the Eel River, recreation water activities, Roann Covered Bridge and the Stockdale Mill. The town has successful festivals and activities throughout the year. Property is currently R2, which is residential with some businesses allowed. Per Seller the town is in process of changing the area to General Business with Residential allowed. There are covenants that are attached in documents. There is a space at the top of the stairs to where the balcony had existed that could be space for a room. Right now it is storage.
