Family History
The Stock Family
Joseph F. Stock (1877-1934) and his wife Mary Jennemann Stock (1887-1967) purchased this home sometime after 1920. The couple resided here with their nine children, Loretta, Maryann, Joseph, Agnes, Julia, Rosemary, Vincent, Bernard, and John, and a live-in servant. Joseph Sr. was a manager of a hardware store. After he passed away in 1934 from liver cancer at the age of 56, Mary continued to live in the home with her children. At this point per the 1940 US Census, the servant was gone, but Mary rented a room to a male lodger to earn extra money.
The Olsens
In 1948, Mary sold the house to Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Olsen. It appears that in 1941 Mr. Olsen was the captain of a freighter which rescued 72 British soldiers, adrift in rafts for four days after their ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. If you are so inclined, please read the article below. I found it both tragic and inspirational.

A rare find! This 5-bedroom Victorian home for sale is situated on a huge lot and features a wrap-around porch, an above ground pool, and a spacious detached garage. The interior offers beautiful original woodwork, pocket doors, tall ceilings, and an airy sunroom leading to the pool. In addition to the five bedrooms on the second floor, the third floor has a huge 38 X 20 room that can be used as a very large sixth bedroom, family room, or a very large office. This expansive house also offers a beautiful stained-glass window, a butler’s pantry, and some closet built-ins. Although it needs to be rehabbed, this home would be absolutely gorgeous once it is restored to its original grandeur. All contracts and offers are subject to final review and approval of seller, all offers or contracts are not binding unless the entire agreement is ratified by all parties.

Judging by that old newspaper photo, I’m inclined to wonder if this is a brick house that’s been covered by siding?
