Family History
In the 1940s and 1950s, the home was owned by J.D. Gallagher, owner of a real estate agency. Even back then, the home had already been divided into apartments. Herbert Anderson and his wife Edna rented one of the apartments in the late 1940s, early 1950s. Herbert was a traveling salesman for a drug company and hopped around from state to state with his family, moving every eight to 10 years with their children, Carl, Robert, William and Sharon. He made pretty good money, though. The 1940 US Census reports that Herbert made $5,000 that year, the equivalent of $85,500 today. The median family income in America that year was only $1,368.
