History
The brick mansion was built in the late 1870s for Joseph S. Sturdevant and Sarah Goodrich Sturdevant. They lived here with their children Harvey, Frederick and James. Joseph, a local merchant in business with his two brothers, suffered a significant loss when their store on Main Street burned in a great fire at the turn of the century. Sarah Sturdevant was a prominent figure in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
When the person who purchased the home in 2004 got it, the home was a three family. He had plans to turn it back to a single family, restoring it back to its former glory as it had not been chopped up too badly. He removed the first floor’s dropped ceiling, and attempted to remove the milk paint on the woodwork knowing that it was originally painted. He rebuilt the roof, ran new crown and astragal molding under the eaves and did a ton of brick work. A previous owner had already replaced the near 40 windows.
When the house next door at 56 Henry came up for sale, the 2004 purchaser of #54, bought the adjacent house. That consumed his time for the next four years, so not much else was done to #54. He and his family ultimately sold #54, and built a new home close to where they worked. The new owner purchased the two-family in 2017.
