Family History

This grand home was the residence of Millard F. Kohler and his wife Lucy.  Mr. Kohler was an optician and jeweler who owned his own shop which sold diamonds, watches, silverware, cut glass and hand-painted china. He also served as watch inspector for the MK & T Ry Co at 1822 Main St in Parsons.

Mr. Kohler wasn’t always a wealthy business owner. He came to Parsons in 1877 and set up a little jeweler’s work bench in a drug store. He had a small wooden safe and slept in the back of the store. In this manner, he was able to save up enough money to eventually open up a luxurious jewelry shop on Main Street, and to purchase this wonderful home for his family. Sadly, his shop building was torn down but is now a little park area in town called The Gathering PLace.
