Family History
Mr. Elias Smith and his wife Jennie purchased this house in 1930. Elias was born in Minsk, Russia, in 1888. He emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years of age, and married his wife a year later. The couple had four daughters, Dinah, Anna, Gertrude and Rebecca. Their only son, Gustav, died in infancy.
Elias owned the home mortgage free, making an excellent living as a fruit merchant and president of the Milwaukee Fruit and Produce Corporation. He was also a prominent member of the Jewish community. Sadly, he was killed in a tragic automobile accident on an icy day in January of 1932. Deeming it too treacherous to drive, he and his friend decided to park the car in a parking garage and take a street car home. As, they entered the garage, another car hit them. When they all alighted their vehicles to inspect the damage, a third vehicle plowed into the group, killing Elias. He was 51.
