Lustron home for sale! Love it when we come across one!
The prefab, enameled steel, Lustron homes were introduced in 1948 in response to the need of housing after WWII. Our featured home today is the blue two-bedroom Westchester model. The Westchester is easily recognized by its notched porch outside of the living room. You can date the Westchester design by the bedroom windows. The earliest homes had pairs of small slit windows set high on the wall. In 1949 and 1950, they changed to the larger single window design that this home has.
In most cases, like our featured home, the foundation was a basic concrete slab. Windows were casement with aluminum sashes, and the skeleton framing of the house was steel. Porcelain steel panels formed the siding, interior walls and roof. The Westchester’s exterior came in four colors: surf blue, dove gray, maize yellow and desert tan.
Lustron homes like this one sold from the factory for about $7,500. By the time a foundation, erection costs and other fees were added, the total could amount to $10,000. At a time when similar-sized frames homes were going for $6,500 complete, $10K seemed a high price to pay for a small, plain looking house. Although about 2,500 Lustron homes were sold, the company soon folded.
Want to own a piece of American and Ohio manufacturing history? Look no further than this original Lustron home. The Columbus-based Lustron Corporation was a housing manufacturer that produced prefabricated homes made ENTIRELY of enameled steel after WWII. Designed by Carl Sandlund, this home is both economical and low-maintenance featuring custom built-ins throughout.
Roughly 2, 500 Lustron homes were built between 1948-1950 with fewer than 900 existing in America today. They are increasingly cherished by owners fascinated by their mid-modern charm and efficiency. This model was built in 1950 and offers 2 bdrms and 1 bath with 1013 SF. This home was updated with a wood burning secondary heating system and laminate countertops. Oversized 1 car detached garage at rear. Unique opportunity to own a unique home.
Our featured home still has its original built-in!
Lustron kitchens did not come with fridge or stove, but they were fitted with sink, steel cabinets, clothes dryer and optional garbage disposal and clothes washer/dishwasher combo with the Westchester Deluxe package. Our featured home is just the basic model.
The bedroom built-ins are still intact, too!
Our featured home boasts its original Lustron bathroom complete with the robe hook, soap dish, toilet paper holder, drinking glass holder and grab bar over the tub.
