Under $100K Sunday – Fixer Upper Cottage in Opelousas $60K – Off Market

1004 Edith St, Opelousas, LA, 70570.   $60,000 Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

I am in love with the interior of this fixer upper! The wow factor certainly is in the detailed arched doorways, but the built-ins, transoms, central staircase, Palladian window, and 9-foot ceilings are wonderful features as well. The house is built on piers, and is heated by space heaters, but mineral rights convey and the home is hooked up to public water and sewer. Unfortunately, the neighborhood is run down and the crime rate is not the best.

City History

Opelousas has a the reputation of welcoming domestic refugees.  At least three Orphan Trains from New City reached Opelousas  before 1929. Per Wikipedia: Opelousas is the heart of a traditional Catholic region of French, Spanish, Canadian, and French West Indian ancestry. Catholic families in Louisiana took in more than 2,000 mostly Catholic orphans to live in their rural farming communities.

Also, in May of 1927, the city accepted thousands of refugees fleeing the ravages of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 in the Mississippi Delta.
