North Hill Historic District

North Hill Historic District has 1,888 contributing structures and is significant due to its many ornate large residences and mansions, including late 19th and early 20th century Second Empires and Queen Annes.

Bower House

One such Second Empire is our featured home. It was built for John Bower in 1889. John was a successful local merchant and tailor whose daughters married well. Both of the daughters built homes around the block from their father’s home.

One of his daughters married Mathias Holstein Henderson, vice-president of Lawrence Saving and Trust, now known as National City Bank. He constructed his red brick Queen Anne in 1895. See below.

John Bower’s second daughter married industrialist Edwin Ohl. See their mansion below.

While the Bower House retains much of its exterior architectural integrity, the interior badly needs the help of materials from an architectural salvage yard. It appears so many of the original interior elements have been lost to time or ravaged by Tom Sawyer and his bucket of white paint.
