OHU50K NOTES

When a realtor says “rustic,” it is code for fixer upper. Fixer upper or not, you have to admit that this home is as sweet as new buds in spring.

The town of Carthage has some interesting history. The town was the home of the Tyson & Jones Buggy Company, a successful cart and buggy maker in the late 1800s. One of the owners, Willian T. Jones, was son of a slave and her white owner. A local legend is that when Tyson Buggy Company closed down, Henry Ford had an interest in purchasing the plant for his auto assembly line. Since Ford was from Detroit, that doesn’t seem likely, and a few years after being shuttered, the former Tyson Buggy plant burned down.

Anyway, Carthage has an annual Buggy Festival that showcases the history of the town and features music, crafts, old tractors, hot rods, and antique buggies made by the Tyson Buggy Company. The event is held in the town square near the Old Court House, an historic landmark.
