OHU50K NOTES

A buyer will not simply be purchasing an old house and five acres with this handyman special, but they will be buying a piece of history. Deer Park Farm has a story, but it may not be the one the realtor tells below. In that story, George Reynolds, the home’s builder, would have been around 83 years old in 1863 when he supposedly was exempt from the Civil War, not due to age, but due to his trade as a blacksmith.

I tend to think Reynold’s descendent, Marie Reynolds Dobyns, has a more plausible, or perhaps more colorful, story. She was a subsequent owner of the house. Her story belies the build date of 1810, but in it (see below), she relates that George E. Reynolds (b.1845) served in the Confederate Army as a blacksmith. He was shot in the back of the head, the bullet exiting through his mouth and taking out teeth. She continues, “A colored man poured cold water on the wound causing the blood to coagulate, thus saving George’s life.”

According to Marie, George originally built a combination log/frame home for his family. He later moved it to its present location by skids and horses, where an addition was constructed. His first wife died in childbirth, and five days later the child passed away. George then married a second time, and along with a stepdaughter had seven natural children who were raised at this home.

REALTOR COMMENTS

This Grand O’Lady has a lot of great history. The original home was built by George Reynolds in 1810. An addition was built in 1820 and the sellers stated the home is eligible for the National Historian Register. In 1863 George Reynolds was exempted from the war between the states because he was a blacksmith. All materials, boards, nails outside and inside are original to the home. Forged by the Reynolds family. Bricks were fired at the creek forge near the home. The home includes 5 bedrooms, 1 bath and 4 fireplaces. There is a 200 year old Ash tree in the front yard welcoming you on hot summer days. Home is a handyman special in need of TLC and is being SOLD AS IS.
