Under $105K Sunday – c.1896 Historic Queen Anne Home For Sale in Galesburg, IL Under $105K – Pending

With the current real estate market going haywire, I decided to go up in price by $5K for our Under $100K Sunday for two spectacular, historic homes this week. The first was posted earlier in Moberly, Missouri. This second beauty is The Wilkens Seacord House, an 1896 Queen Anne Victorian that the Galesburg Landmark Commission designated a Local Landmark in January 1989. It was serving as a bed & breakfast inn before COVID.

Family History

Wilkins Seacord (1833-1900), born in New York, ventured  to Ohio and Michigan at age 22 before finding what he described as a “suitable place of residence” in Galesburg in 1855. During his early years in Galesburg, Seacord was employed as a teacher and a farmer. After his election as sheriff of Knox County for a two-year stint, he served as livestock manager of the Galesburg stockyards, winning the reputation of being one of the best judges of livestock in that area. Seacord became quite successful over the years with several businesses, three large farms and an early stockholder of the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. and Purington Brick Company.

‒ Initially he devoted his time to teaching and farming. He was elected sheriff of Knox County for a two-year period in 1868 before becoming engaged in the livestock business as manager of the stockyards in Galesburg. Seacord was recognized as one of the best judges of livestock in the Mississippi Valley area. He was associated with a multitude of business enterprises, owned three large farms and became one of the early stockholders of the Farmers & Mechanics Bank where he served on the board for several years. He lived in this home with his second wife Fannie and died here of Bright’s disease on July 3, 1900. Seacord was only able to enjoy his spectacular home for four years.
