Under $75K Thursday ~ c.1870s Second Empire in Gowanda NY Under $60K ~ Sold

Since I visited my sister in her new digs in Raleigh, North Carolina, last summer, I have been in love with the Second Empire style of architecture. Raleigh’s Oakwood Historic District boasts gorgeous specimens of the style.

This Second Empire on Chapel Street in Gowanda, New York, is somewhat smaller than Raleigh’s, but still captures my heart. You can read the realtor comments below for a description, but I will furnish you with a bit of historical background of the property first.

Of course, the realtor’s 1940 build date is just plain foolish. The build date is more likely somewhere in the 1870’s range. According to the 1900 US Census, Byron L. Kimble (1847-1935) resided here with his wife Deborah and niece Emily Akins. Kimble started out as a traveling salesman, but had settled down as a dry goods merchant by 1900. Not only did he run a successful business, but he was very active in village affairs.
