OHU50K NOTES
This c.1873 brick fixer upper immediately caught my eye because it reminded me of a house near where I grew up. As children, we would take walks down what my British mother called, “The English Road.” On this narrow, winding road stood lovely brick cottages, which I later was to learn were the outbuildings for the Pepperidge Hall estate, a castle-like Mansion of the Gilded Age built in 1888 and razed in 1941. I have included a couple of photos below of the old dairy barn and the manager’s house.
I’m reminiscing, but growing up where I did is the reason I have such a passion for old houses.
So back to our featured house. Belleville, Illinois, is filled with sweet brick cottages.
After the failure of the German Revolution of 1848, many educated Germans fled their homeland and settled in Belleville. By 1870, about 90% of the Belleville’s residents were either German-born or of German descent.
These simple brick cottages were the first style of houses in the city, known locally as “German street houses.” Did you notice the pocket doors, high ceilings, linoleum rug and the beautiful tiled floor in the bathroom?
