OHU50K NOTES

This c.1893 foreclosure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also called the Dixon House, it has been known as Seven Oaks for over 120 years because of the seven oak tress that dot the property.

Family Background

Due to its location and elegance, it was a very suitable home for banker Eli N. Baily. In 1886, at age 29, Eli purchased Sac County State Bank, moved to Sac City and built this Queen Anne home in 1893 for he, his wife Amie and daughter Elizabeth.

Elizabeth married Paul Dixon and they lived in the house with her parents for decades. Paul was the son of W.J. and Mary Dixon. The Dixons had moved to Sac City in 1892 where W.J. served as Clerk of Court until 1899. That year he opened Dixon Lumber Company, which was owned by the Dixon family until the 1980s. Both the Baily and Dixon families were very active in civic affairs.

The house remained in the family for 100 years until it was sold in the 1990s to settle Elizabeth’s estate. It was completely restored in 1995-1996, but is being sold “As Is.”

Architectural Elements

Seven Oaks is a 2.5-story late Queen Anne with a modified rectangular plan. The foundation is fieldstone and the chimney brick. Extensive oak woodwork, exquisite original lighting fixtures and the flowering vine relief in the living room reflect the style of the times.

The foreclosure is situated in a residential neighborhood on a tree-lined street.
