OHU50K NOTES

This wonderful fixer upper is located in a historic district of the city of Saginaw, Michigan. In 1850, the whole of Saginaw County was only 2,609 residents, but by the 1884 census, after the lumber boom, the population had soared to 75,813.

In 1893, after a fire destroyed 257 buildings in what is now the South Jefferson Street Historic District, many lumber barons, and well-off business and professional families constructed gorgeous homes on the street. Only 18% of the homes remained standing after the fire, so you will find most construction dates ranging between 1895 to 1929.

Our home today was raised out of the ashes in 1894, a year after the fire.  Sadly, sometime in the subsequent decades, much of the Shingle Victorian’s original woodwork was painted. including pocket doors, molding and cast iron radiators. At least the beautiful staircase was spared.

While I could not find who was the original owner, Madge Sheltraw was the owner in 1984 when the National Register of Historic Places nominated the house. The National Register of Historic Places reported then that many of the homes were undergoing respectful restorations.

A description of how the 1893 fire spread and a photo of Madge can be found below.

If anyone has information about any of the previous owners, I would love to add the home’s history here.
