OHU50K NOTES

This move-in ready shotgun house was built in 1900 and is located in the historic California neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.

German immigrants started moving into this area in the 1840s, subdividing the farmland and constructing primarily wood-framed shotgun houses. The neighborhood was formerly known as Henderson, but the name changed to California during California’s Gold Rush days.

As the railroads came to town, so did the growth of the California neighborhood. When our featured house was built, the neighborhood was a mix of white and black families living in shotgun houses, with large mansions constructed by rich industrialists along Broadway.

From the 1950s to the 1980s, the neighborhood lost 50% of its housing stock due to urban renewal, but today homes are being rehabbed along Gallagher Street. A row of similar shotgun homes sit across from a school yard, which makes for a pleasant appearance if not for pleasant crime rates. For buyers willing to take a chance on the neighborhood, however, a $0 down loan program is available to purchase this home.

For those who are strictly interested in homes with acreage, we have a new site up and running. Please “like” our Facebook page Country Life Dreams.
