OHU50K NOTES
Stained glass and natural woodwork heaven! Yes, it’s a fixer upper, but partial rehab has already started. If you have been a reader of OHU50K for a while, you know how much I love the Delmarva Peninsula. Countryside meets seaside, and who doesn’t appreciate that? The quaint fishing village of Crisfield has flooding issues, and our featured home is in zone AE. With a 1% annual chance of flooding, mortgage companies will require flood insurance.
House History
During the late 1800s, Crisfield experienced extremely high oyster harvests which translated into elaborate Queen Anne homes being constructed along Main Street. Our featured home today is the Albert Sterling House. Built around 1900, the home offers a fancy Eastlake-style front porch with arched wooden screens. Turned post, turned balusters and a molded handrail are notable.
Family History
Captain Albert T. Sterling (1857-1928), a successful mariner and boat owner, had the house built for himself, his wife Lillie and children Sallie, Olin and Florence just before 1900. He was one of the Crisfield watermen who made their fortunes as the oyster harvests peaked in the late 1800s and beyond. He lived and died in this home 1928. Being a sailor was extremely hard work, and I think he must have persuaded his children to take other routes as Sallie became a high school teacher and Olin a bookkeeper.
