This c.1900 fixer upper has so many original architectural details worth rescuing. Give me a house with hardwood floors, pocket doors, L-shaped staircase, built-ins and vintage kitchen, and I’m all in. The spacious kitchen not only has steel cabinetry, but that floor-to-ceiling cupboard is simply wonderful!
I have a thing for those types of cupboards. When we were restoring our c.1915 American foursquare, my husband salvaged several of those beauties from houses that were being razed at the Jersey Shore. We kept two; a painted one with glass doors in the kitchen; and a natural wood one in the dining room.
After raising our kids in that wonderful Cape May home, we sold off most of our possessions and relocated to the west coast. I could not, however, part with those two pieces. The kitchen cupboard now stands in our main residence, and the natural wood cupboard looks like it has always been in our second home, a 1930’s bungalow in rural Indiana.
Back to this St. Louis house. I was pleasantly surprised that although the neighborhood is not the most attractive, crime rates are not bad. See the chart below.
Also, those vintage steel cabinets are keepers. I just saw a much smaller set of 1950’s Morton steel cabinets on eBay for $3,300.
