Per the National Register of Historic Places application made in 1994, this is the Joseph A. Spruill House built in 1886 and located in the Columbia Historic District. Joseph (1843-1904) lived here with his wife Mary Evelyn Moore Spruill and their children Paul, Phillip, Evelyn, Roxanna, Ernest, Josie and Catherine. According to the 1904 North Carolinian newspaper article I found, Mr Spruill went to church one night, woke up the next morning sick and died at home three days later.
