Under $75K Thursday – c.1925 Affordable Home For Sale in Bluefield, WV Under $55K – Contingent

OHU50K Notes

I always try to plug in the address of these old houses to see what comes up. The article I found in the 25 April 1936 edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph re: 508 Union Street, Bluefield, WV, gave me a chuckle. Apparently, Wrigley Gum had an adverting gimmick whereby they gave away $1 dollar bills. Florence Hall of this address was one of the many winners.

Family History

Julius and Florence Hall had this bungalow built in 1925, and paid close to $8,000 for it with the land (the equivalent of $127,000 in today’s dollars). Julius, a 1911 graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD,  was an engineer for the Appalachian Electric Power Company. The couple resided here with their daughters, Florence and Martha, at least into the late 1940s.
