Grants began as a railroad camp in the 1880s when the three Grants brothers were hired to build a section of the Atlantic-Pacific Railroad through the area. After a Navajo shepherd discovered uranium ore there, a mining boom was sparked that lasted until the 1980s. When mining bit the dust, the town fell into a depression, but lately the scenic beauty of the region has brought in tourism that has revitalized the economy somewhat.
