Family History
This was the home of Enoch F. Byng (1839-1936). Per Find-A-Grave, “Enoch F. Byng, 97, Civil war veteran and one of the oldest men in Cedar Rapids, died late Wednesday. He had been a resident of Iowa since he was 11 years old when the family came to Clinton from England.
Enoch was a member of Company B 26th Iowa Infantry. He rose to the rank of lieutenant, a rank he achieved before he was wounded at the Battle of Atlanta. He resigned his commission later that year.
When he was not a soldier, he was a farmer and successful sawmill owner and operator. He and his father ran sawmills in Clinton, Iowa, and Paducah, Kentucky. He moved to California for a time after his wife died in Kentucky” in 1906, but returned to Cedar Rapids to live in this home.
The 1930 US Census for Cedar Rapids, Iowa has him living with his daughters Alice Byng and Louise Byng Wilcox.
