Family History
Vaden Conklin (1870-1946) would awake in the wee hours of the morning to start baking breads and cakes at the Conklin Bakery which he and his brother owned for more than 50 years. In 1926, the brothers expanded the business with a massive bakery plant (shown below). They even held a dance to celebrate.
Vaden married his wife Geraldine in 1894 and purchased this home around 1910 as the bakery became more successful. It was here that the couple raised their daughter, Genevieve Diane.
In 1961, three firms (Willis Studio, Orkin Exterminating, and Frances Hayes, commercial artist) relocated from Main Street, Decatur, to this home and remodeled it into offices. By the 1980s, the Pickin Parlour, a music store where bluegrass jam sessions were held, and the Sound Center, a stereo store were housed in the building. Soon after the year 2000, the building was converted back into a home.
