Family History
George C. Temple (1867-1938) had this house built soon after his marriage to Annie Hammer in 1893. The couple raised their children here, Margaret, Benjamin, George Jr., Mary and Brooke. Mr. Temple owned his own insurance company, and he did quite well, having the means to hire a housekeeeper, cook, and handyman. He also was a Danville city treasurer at one point. Mr. Temple died in the home in 1938.
His wife, Annie Hammer Temple was an amazing woman for her times. She graduated from Woman’s College in Richmond in 1890 with degrees in Music and Art. During those years she was the leading soprano at her church. Following graduation, she went to New York to pursue her studies and was awarded a scholarship to the Conservatory of Music in Paris. After marriage, she directed the choir at her church for 25 years while raising a large family and being active in many civic organizations. She continued to live alone in the large house following her husband’s death. She died in 1954.
