I love diving into the history of a house whenever I am able! This home has a rather sad tale. Firstly, the realtor’s build date of 1920 is incorrect. It was owned at least by 1910 by German immigrant Hermine M. Giese (1875-1950). She was a young widow. Her husband, Hermann J. Giese, also a German immigrant, was in manufacturing, but he passed away sometime between the years 1905 and 1910 before he was 40. This was not the first death in the young family. An infant daughter, Francine, died sometime after her first birthday. It seems, however, the widow Hermine may have come into some money after her husband’s death, because it appears it was then that she purchased this house.

Hermine lived here with her surviving children, Rudolph, Irmgard and Ottilia, along with a servant according to the 1910 and 1920 US Census. Hermine had her own income and was doing quite well. Per the 1930 US Census, the house was worth $12,000, about $190,000 in today’s dollars. By that time Rudolph and Ottilia had moved out of the home. By 1940, Hermine’s financial position had declined somewhat. She no longer had a servant, her spinster daughter, Irmgard, was working as a clerical in the shoe factory, and the pair took in a lodger to help maintain house expenses.  Hermine lived in the house until her death in 1950.
