OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house. We first featured it back in April, but it has since been reduced to $37,500.

I spent way too much time attempting to find the history of this c.1853 stone Greek Revival. I thought I could gather information from the name inscribed on the front gable. It looks like L. Altman to me, but that led me nowhere.

Here is a possibility though. In 1882, Summit County purchased a 140-acre farm in Bette’s Corners for $15,000 for the purpose of building a home for orphan children. When citizens complained that this was too large a tract and too far from Akron, the city suspended improvements. In 1889, with monies from the sale of parcels from the Bette’s Corners farm, the city purchased the old Jewett farmstead on South Arlington Street at the far southeast corner of Akron.

I think the old Jewett homestead may be our featured home, but I am not entirely sure. If it is our old stone house, then in 1889 the home sat on seven acres, and the building was rehabbed into its new use as an orphan’s home. Eventually as Akron grew, citizens urged the city to build a modern, brick and steel structure for the children in another location.

For those who are strictly interested in homes with acreage, we have a new site up and running. Please “like” our Facebook page Country Life Dreams.
