OHU50K NOTES ~ Historic Fixer Upper House For Sale

This is the very first house that got me started writing OHU50K. I was visiting my daughter in Indiana in 2015 when I saw this house as it stood above with a for sale sign on the front lawn. I instantly fell in love. At that point it needed a paint job, did not have the new roof and was listed at $45,000. The interior had spacious rooms right out of 1867. We already had two homes, (one that needed work), so I couldn’t take on another fixer upper. But I was so happy when someone purchased the Rising Sun beauty.

Unfortunately, the new owner has undergone open heart surgery. He gave it a new paint job and new roof. All the old exterior wood has been replaced, the windows have been repaired and a new inline service box for the electric was just put in. The fixer upper, however, still needs an interior restoration. The big jobs that need completion are new bathroom, sewer and water hookups.

Rising Sun is the quintessential charming Mid-Western town. It sits on the banks of the Ohio River. I spent three months there last summer. If the Rising Star Casino’s buffet is still open, you must try it. My son-in-law was an accountant there.  I took a bunch of photos of homes in the Rising Sun Historic District that I never got around to showing you, but plan on sharing with you soon.

Family History

The home, known locally as the Rumpe House, was built in 1867. The Rumpe family lived here for decades, and I believe brothers Fred and Harry (1870-1951)  inherited the home from their parents. Harry owned a repair shop, and Fred was a house builder. In fact, it seems that sometime before 1930, Fred built the bungalow that sits next door at 512 Main St. Fred and his wife Elizabeth, and adult children Ernest and Tillie, remained in the family home, while Harry and his wife Mary moved into the new bungalow.

OWNER COMMENTS (From 2019)

I have a historic home for sale. It is in Indiana land marks and protected by them. Had open heart surgery and now cant finish. It has been painted and new roof. All the old wood replaced on the out side and windows repaired. It needs restored on the inside and finished. Just put complete new in line service box for electric. Still needs bathroom, sewer and water hookup. Really nice old well built 1867 house.
