History
The Arsenal House, also known as Commandant’s House, is a historic 2.5-story, brick structure on a stone foundation, 30 by 36 feet, in the Federal style. It was built by the federal government and was originally part of a three-acre complex consisting of barracks, arsenal, magazine, workshops, etc., to support American forces waging the war of 1812. Located across the military road to Sacket’s Harbor, the house had an orchard and Wood Creek on the west and lovely gardens on the east. Construction was overseen in 1813 under the supervision of Major James Dalleba. The house was used for the military until 1873. At a later date, 1-story wings were added as well as front and rear porches. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
