Railcar

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passnger Motor Car) Number 9817 was built by Pullman in August 1928. It saw service in various places including Colorado. The car is in good condition as it approaches it’s100th year. All steel construction with the exception of the floor which is wood and in solid condition. It measures 72′ long by 10′ wide. Twice as much usable floor space as a caboose. This is a standard gauge railroad car.

Uses

IF YOU SEE THIS AD, IT IS ABSOLUTELY AVAILABLE! It has 6 windows and two sliding doors on each side. It could make a cute mountain cabin, Air B&B, ADU, ice cream shop, small restaurant, art gallery, tourist shop, or?

Delivery

I can transport it by highway truck or railroad flatcar to you at additional cost. The cost of delivery is not included in the purchase price. Delivery cost will vary based on distance and difficulty navigating to and around your property. The car cannot currently be transported on its own wheels and therefore will need to be loaded onto a railroad flat car. Loading and unloading for rail transport will require cranes at each end. Again I can coordinate every step of these moves.

More

I have restored over 150 Railroad passenger cars for operational as well as static use. I have the designers, craftspeople, and tradespeople on staff who can build it out to your dreams. It could be restored to active rail service. Also available As-Is. Located in the Denver area. Storage available. The last photo is as it appeared in 1946. *The trucks (wheels and suspension) it is sitting on do NOT go with the car. I have other, more original appearance, trucks for it and will include those with the purchase.* NOW THAT YOU’RE DONE READING THE AD, YES, IT IS STILL ABSOLUTELY AVAILABLE! YOU DON’T HAVE TO ASK IF IT IS STILL AVAILABLE. No, I will not pay “the moving company” when they come to pick it up. No I will not give you my phone number unless we are making arrangements for you to come see it in person and you give me your phone number first. Beware, my hobby is abusing scammers.

Pullman History

The Pullman railroad car holds a significant place in American history, particularly in the realm of transportation and labor relations. Here’s a brief overview of its history:

  1. Origins: The Pullman Company was founded by George Pullman in 1867. Pullman initially started as a manufacturer of luxury railcars designed for overnight travel, aiming to provide a comfortable and elegant experience for passengers.

  1. Innovation: Pullman introduced several innovations to the railroad industry, including standardized car designs, sleeping accommodations, and dining cars. These innovations revolutionized long-distance travel in the United States, making train travel a more comfortable and convenient option for passengers.
  2. Pullman Palace Car: The Pullman Company’s signature product was the Pullman Palace Car, which set the standard for luxury rail travel. These cars were lavishly appointed with plush seating, sleeping berths, and elegant furnishings, offering a level of comfort and service unmatched by other modes of transportation at the time.
  3. Pullman Porters: One of the most significant aspects of Pullman’s history is its employment of African American workers as porters on its sleeper cars. Pullman Porters played a crucial role in providing service to passengers, including attending to their needs, maintaining the cleanliness of the cars, and ensuring a pleasant travel experience. Despite the demanding nature of their work and low wages, Pullman Porters became symbols of professionalism and dignity within the African American community.
  4. Labor Relations: The Pullman Company’s labor practices came under scrutiny in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1894, a labor strike known as the Pullman Strike erupted in response to wage cuts and oppressive working conditions imposed by the company. The strike, which spread across the country and paralyzed rail traffic, was eventually quelled by federal intervention. However, it brought attention to the grievances of workers and led to increased scrutiny of labor practices in the railroad industry.
  5. Legacy: Despite the controversies surrounding its labor practices, the Pullman Company left a lasting legacy in the railroad industry. The Pullman Palace Car became synonymous with luxury and comfort in rail travel, and the company’s innovations set the standard for passenger accommodations on trains. Today, the Pullman name is still associated with quality and prestige in the realm of railroad history.
