Location

This Pennsylvania handyman special is in South Fork,  a borough located in Cambria County It is situated in the southern part of the state, in the Allegheny Mountains region. The borough is named after the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River, which runs through the area.

South Fork has a rich history and is perhaps best known for its connection to the infamous Johnstown Flood of 1889. The South Fork Dam, located about 14 miles upstream from Johnstown, was a privately owned earthen dam built to create a reservoir for the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, an exclusive retreat for wealthy individuals including Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick.

On May 31, 1889, heavy rainfall caused the South Fork Dam to fail, releasing an enormous volume of water downstream. The resulting flood devastated the town of Johnstown, located downstream, and caused one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history, claiming more than 2,200 lives.

In the present day, South Fork is a small community with a population of around 1,000 residents. It offers a quiet and rural atmosphere, surrounded by picturesque landscapes and natural beauty. The borough provides basic amenities and services to its residents, including schools, parks, and local businesses. Its location in the Allegheny Mountains makes it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and hunting.

South Fork serves as a reminder of the tragic events of the past, and efforts have been made to preserve and educate visitors about the history and impact of the Johnstown Flood. The Johnstown Flood National Memorial, operated by the National Park Service, is located nearby and provides insights into the disaster through exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs.
