Below is a photo of the William Franklin Holmes (1854-1939) family on the wrap-around porch of this amazing circa 1894 Queen Anne Victorian. William married Roberta Lea in 1882 and soon after built this home with the monies earned from the Holmes Brothers Grocery Store. William was a handsome man who was known as being honest and fair. When Roberta died in 1901, she left left William with six young children to care for, Chester, Nannie, Karie, Everette, Helen and Davis. (A seventh child, Oliver, had died in infancy in 1895.) It didn’t take William long, however, to find another wife. He married Katie Jones (1874-1952) in 1901, a woman 20 years his junior.
William and Katie had one daughter together, Katie, who was born in 1914. After the older children left the nest, the Holmes moved out of this house to another lovely, but much smaller, home at 360 North Broadway.

The stated history and build date of the house appears to be off by about a decade. Sanborn fire maps of the lot where the house is built don’t show this house in existence until after 1904. W F Holmes did build premises for the mercantile on Main Street as early as 1894 though. Prior to that, the location of the Holmes Bros store was an empty lot.

I see the house on the 1898 Sanborn Map on the corner of 3rd and Valley (now Nebraska St). Holmes had a small frame built mercantile business as early as 1892. He built the brick building on Main in 1894.
