Well, this house sure stopped me in my tracks. It reminded me of a house in Hoosick Falls, NY, where my mom and sisters lived. The homeowner was angry with the village, so they did a hideous paint job on the house which is in a prime location in town.

Rather than out of anger, our featured home today was painted this way as a labor of love to implement the new owner’s plan to turn the house into a communal art center. With the help of her parents who had just sold their California home, Miss Bader purchased this fixer upper last year for $45,000. For months she has been tearing up floors, knocking down walls, removing layers of wall paper and adding her artistic vision. She even found a clawfoot tub buried in the back yard that she had planned to make into a fire pit. After naming the art center HOBA House, several artists had moved into the home in August to help out. Apparently, things didn’t work out, because the property is now on the market.

Family History

The first owners were Eleanora DeLong and her daughter Mary. In 1902 young Mary won a Christmas rag doll from the Courier-Times. Sometime after that, the house was turned into a duplex, and now Mary had a little playmate as little Henrietta Stoerr (who won a 5th grade perfect attendance award at the Portland School) and her family rented out the first floor apartment. Three people died in the home – in 1944, Hiram Brewster , age 75; in 1975, Mrs. William Whalin, age 43; and in 1985, Frank Hill, age 64.
