Under $100K Sunday – c.1905 Craftsman Bungalow with Amazing Woodwork in Decatur, IL Under $80K
January 15, 2023
OHU50K Notes. $79,900
Own a piece of history on W. Main St. Decatur. Traditional finishes and style adorn this three bedroom, two bath home that features spectacular woodwork surrounding the fireplace mantle and glass in shelves in the dining area. They don’t make them like this anymore! I was sad to hear that the buyer who purchased the home in September 2021 for $70K is selling it so quickly. The OHU50K reader from California was so excited to have purchased the home and had planned to fully restore the home, starting with the roof. The home, however, looks exactly the same as when purchased in 2021.

They just don’t make homes like this anymore! This 3 bedroom beauty sits on a corner lot in Historical West-End. There is a wrap-around front porch with a porch swing to enjoy the Summer evenings plus a separate side porch. Open the front door to the magnificent foyer/living room with a gorgeous staircase and magnificent fireplace. Check out the lovely hardwood floors in the living room, hallway and dining room! The main floor bedroom has a large adjoining full bath that you can also access from the hallway. Two more bedrooms upstairs with a bonus room and a large bath with washer & dryer hookup! You’ll find many eccentric built-ins and tucked away storage cabinets that lead to the charm of this home, along with the beautiful woodwork! Two car garage (with a new roof) and a shed offer additional storage.

Family History
This was the home of Ted and LaRue Shelley and their children Ted and Nancy from the 1930s through the 1960s. The couple married young (LaRue was only in her teens, and Ted had a 10th grade education while LaRue an 8th), but they purchased this home by working hard. Ted worked a 40 hour work week as a baker in a bakery, and LaRue worked as a saleswoman at Sears when the children got older. The house was passed down to the son Ted after the parents passing. We can thank the Shelleys for being excellent stewards over the amazing woodwork!!

I have purchased this splendiferous home and will be moving into it in September. The roofs are currently being replaced and I will be maintaining it’s wonderful historic wood features to the best of my ability. I am so lucky to be able to own this fine period home. Kerry R.
