Sold – Acreage Wednesday – West Virginia Farmhouse For Sale on 1.32 Acres $38K
OHU50K Notes $38,000 Sold
The appealing farmhouse for sale on 1.32 acres offers four bedrooms, one bath and public water and sewer. It is located in Pullman, West Virginia (pop. 134). The town was named for George Pullman, the designer and manufacturer of the Pullman sleeping car. In fact, the town of Pullman was founded as a company town for his workers. George Pullman was a miserable boss, however, charging high rents for company housing and paying low wages.
In 1894, to maintain profitability, Pullman even halved wages while requiring workers to work longer hours. Rents and goods sold in his company stores did not decrease in price, however. This led to the Pullman Strike, where 30 strikers were killed by federal military troops ordered in by Pullman’s friend, President Grover Cleveland.
