OHU50K NOTES

Family History

Thomas McConnell left England in 1893, settled in Pittsburgh and married Mary Dunne in 1898. Soon after, the childless couple purchased this home on Walter Street and lived there until 1929. After the death of Mary’s sister, Annie Dunn McConnell (the sisters were married to the McConnell brothers), Annie’s daughters, Mercedes, Jean and Grace, came to live with Thomas and Mary. Mercedes became a stenographer at age 16, and Thomas was a steel worker who, per his WWI draft registration, was of medium height and had blue eyes and brown hair. He died in 1929 at the home at the age of 56. In 1911, however, he made news  in The Pittsburgh Press when he was detained by Ohio police after being found with his feet in a stream, incoherent after being struck in the head.
