Chloride was a silver mining camp and is considered the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in Arizona. The town is currently almost a ghost town with a population of 229, but at one time the population peaked at 5,000 residents.
Author Louis L’Amour purchased a $50 claim in the area in the 1920s, but during his visit the town caught fire. L’Amour aided the citizens in a bucket brigade that was ultimately unable to stop most of the town from burning down to the ground.
