Alton, Illinois, is a riverfront city with a mix of historical significance and modern amenities. Here’s an overview of its pros and cons:
Pros:
- Rich History: Alton has a deep historical background, with notable sites like the Alton Museum of History and Art and historical architecture, making it appealing for history buffs.
- Beautiful Riverfront: The city is situated along the Mississippi River, offering scenic views and opportunities for outdoor activities like walking, biking, and fishing.
- Community Events: Alton hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, fostering a sense of community and local engagement.
- Proximity to St. Louis: Located just 25 miles from St. Louis, residents have easy access to the amenities, cultural attractions, and job opportunities of a larger city while enjoying a smaller-town atmosphere.
Cons:
- Limited Job Market: While there are local job opportunities, the job market can be competitive, and residents may need to commute to nearby cities for more options.
- Urban Challenges: Like many older cities, Alton faces some urban issues, including crime rates in certain areas and infrastructure needs.
- Transportation: Public transportation options are limited, making a personal vehicle necessary for most residents.
- Weather: The climate can be humid in the summer and cold in the winter, which may not appeal to everyone.
Overall, Alton is well-suited for those who appreciate history and a scenic environment, along with the benefits of nearby urban amenities, though it may not meet everyone’s needs regarding job opportunities and urban challenges.

Looks fairly amazing, so you gotta wonder what is seriously wrong when they talk about occupancy permits, etc. Looking at the back, perhaps it’s a foundation issue? It’s been HGTV’d already. I wish they were more forthcoming with the details, instead of making you pay for an inspection, etc. Kinda like when there is a dearth of interior photos.
