Family History

This was the home of Dr. Warren Fay (1799-1875). He was a physician from New England, who established himself in this region in 1823 coinciding with the opening of the Erie Canal. The residence was constructed specifically for him. Dr. Fay and his spouse, Freelove Matilda Palmer, established their household in Pavilion, where he developed a reputation as a shrewd investor in stocks and regional banking institutions.

An 1890 biographical account described him as a “heroic practitioner” known for generous use of bloodletting and administering substantial doses of calomel and jalap medications. His medical practice brought him considerable recognition and financial success.

In 1870, Dr. Fay sold the property, which included 18 acres, for the substantial sum of $6,500 to Eli and Sylvester Carr, two brothers who had retired from farming in the area. Subsequently, Eli’s son George Irving Carr (1854-1936) emerged as the town’s principal merchant and made this house his family home alongside his wife Blanche.

Interestingly, Blanche was Dr. Fay’s granddaughter, who had spent time in the house during her childhood. She later inherited her grandfather’s golden timepiece and a portion of his considerable estate.
