John Bruney, owner of an insurance agency, owned the home in the 1930s. He lived here with his wife Alice and adult children William and Susan (named after her grandmother), who worked in their father’s business. According to the U.S. Census, their house was worth $5,000 in 1930.

It is likely that the Bruney Agency sold insurance to the parents of Bob Dole, former long-time senator. The Doles lived just around the corner at 1035 Maple Street in the 1930s and ’40s when Bob was growing up.
