This was originally the home of Edwin James Stephens ((1844-1920). Born in England, Edwin came to the States as a young man and became a naturalized US citizen. In 1865, he married Eleanor Loden(1845-1934) in Newark, New Jersey. Twenty years later, the couple settled in Henderson, North Carolina, where Edwin opened his own business, a bookstore called Henderson Book Store. At about the same time, they built this home. They lived here with their daughter, Eleanor Daisy, a sister-in-law, and later daughter Eleanor’s children.
