Pros

Highly Affordable Living

  • Overall cost of living is roughly 23–24% below the national average, with housing about 45–55% cheaper than U.S. median prices. Typical homes range around $155K–$225K, and rent for a two-bedroom is about $840/month

Cultural Heritage & Downtown Renewal

  • Rich history as a frontier military post, with landmarks like the Fort Smith National Historic Site. Downtown neighborhoods offer Victorian-era architecture and a growing arts district with street murals, community theatres, and coffee shops

Outdoor Recreation & Parks

  • Parks like Ben Geren Regional Park offer trails, disc golf, water park features, and green spaces. Nearby natural spots like Poteau Mountain and Lake Fort Smith State Park add hiking, kayaking, and weekend escapes

Stable Employment Anchors

  • Manufacturing, healthcare, education, and government major employers include Mercy Hospital, Baptist Health, University of Arkansas–Fort Smith (≈6,500 students), and firms like Walther Manufacturing, which recently expanded and promised 76 new jobs over five years

Transit & Regional Connectivity

  • Served by a regional airport and the Chaffee Crossing district is experiencing commercial growth with new businesses, restoration of old Army buildings, and even plans for a film studio development

Cons

High Crime Rates & Safety Issues

  • Crime in Fort Smith is notably above national and peer-city averages. Your chances of being a victim of violent crime are approximately 1 in 96, and property crime risk is around 1 in 24. Motor vehicle theft is especially high
As Redditors note, visible poverty and abandoned lots contribute to uneven safety depending on the neighborhood

Limited Job Diversity & Low Incomes

  • Although anchored by a few major employers, the job market skews toward manufacturing and service roles. There are few professional or STEM career paths available locally, causing many young people to leave after high school
Median household income (~$48K) is below national norms, and poverty sits around 19–20%

Challenging Climate & Tornado Risk

  • Summers are hot and humid, regularly peaking above 90 °F, and winters are mild. Fort Smith lies in Tornado Alley, with real, if infrequent risk of severe storms

High Sales & Utility Costs

  • Arkansas state sales tax is 6.5% plus a 2% city tax in Fort Smith (~8.5% total). Some communities also report high water/sewer rates related to ongoing infrastructure upgrades under federal consent decrees

Limited Public Transit & Entertainment Options

  • Car ownership is necessary in most parts of the city. Public transit networks are limited despite some expansion efforts. Entertainment and nightlife options remain modest—though locally owned restaurants, breweries, and art events provide some vibrancy

Some Social and Economic Challenges

  • Forums highlight conservative culture, slow pace of progress, and an exodus of motivated young adults. Many feel change is talked about but institutionalized social mobility lags behind expectations
