History

The Minto Valley School was founded in 1885. This building was built to replace a schoolhouse that was moved and to accommodate the growing number of students in 1892. Another room was added on to the rear by 1915.

Photographs of the school and its children can be found in the Library of Congress, part of Lewis Hines’s work showcasing child labor in the early 20th century. The building maintains a high level of integrity, including wainscoting, painted chalkboards, and chalk rails.

In the 1950s, the building was moved to its present location and turned into a duplex. At some point thereafter, a garage door was cut into the building and it was used as a mechanic’s shop. A new roof and garage door were installed in 2021.

Minto Valley School. Six children are all that are attending here out of 30 that enrolled six weeks ago, and 40 are expected after beet work is over. Many of these children lost 50% of their school time through the beet work.
