c.1900 Fixer Upper Second Empire in Port Deposit, MD $50K – Sold

I don’t care what condition it is in, I cannot pass up a Second Empire. This one is in much better shape than the Cheshire, MA, Second Empire we featured last week. It boasts hardwood floors, cast iron radiators, a beautiful staircase, multiple fireplaces, and my favorite element , a floor-to-ceiling kitchen cupboard!

The home lies in the Port Deposit Historic District. Originally named Creswell’s Ferry until 1812, the town was built on the Susquehanna River’s flood plain.  Due to flooding issues, most of the homes built along Main Street have a high basement for flood protection.  Just outside of town was a successful granite quarry. In fact, the gorgeous Presbyterian Church across the street from our featured home was constructed with the local stone. From U.S. Census records, it appears that John Krauss, the town’s barber, and his wife, Anna Sutor Krauss , owned the home for decades. It was worth $3,000 in 1930.  By 1940 the Krauss’ daughter had moved in with her husband and three young children. John died at age 73 in 1944, and the funeral service was held in the home.

Port Deposit (pop. 653) is such a charming town. You will love the flavor of the architecture and the location along the east bank of the Susquehanna River. What you probably will not love is the flooding. The town rates 9/10.
